Subcontractor Spotlight: Kates Security Services

Kates Security Services is an MBE, DBE certified business handling physical security for the Obama Presidential Center project. For this Subcontractor Spotlight, we spoke with Kates’ Vice President, Dr. Joseph Lee.

Q: What sets Kates apart?

A: We have some of the best technology out there and top experts in our industry. But when clients call Kates, it's because they're looking for the power of an international organization with the attention of a local organization. In a nutshell, we care!

Q: What is the biggest challenge minorities face in your industry?

A: Getting our foot in the door. When you look at the workforce, many security officers are minorities. If they can be the workers, they can be the managers. If they can be the managers, they can be the owners. We have to work a little harder to prove that we can compete.

Q: What excites you most about being a part of the OPC project?

A: When I talk to officers who are onsite, we reflect on how they're going to be able to tell their grandkids, “I was a part of this!” Our team will be as much a part of this history as the building itself. I'm proud that, even if someone leaves us, they can take this experience with them.

Q: What is your greatest hope for the outcome of the OPC?

A: My real hope is that the children of today will see this and, down the road, realize that they watched it get built. I hope that our young people will grab a hold of it, be proud of it, and take advantage of it and all of the things that it will be for the community.
