Lakeside Alliance Announces Bid Package Release for Obama Center

Chicago Defender

Lakeside Alliance, builders of the Obama Presidential Center, announced the release of bid packages for work on the Obama Presidential Center project. The scopes of work include roofing, resilient flooring & carpet, wood, and resinous flooring, and asphalt paving. The dates for when work will begin on-site for these packages range from the third quarter of 2023 to the first quarter of 2025. There will be one last bid package release for the project in Spring 2022.

As part of their commitment to expanding opportunities for populations that have been historically underrepresented in the construction industry, Lakeside Alliance has pledged to award at least 50% of subcontractor packages to diverse businesses. Currently a quarter of the way through the procurement process, Lakeside Alliance is meeting this goal.

“Through the development of the Obama Presidential Center, Lakeside Alliance and the Obama Foundation are leveraging their partnership to lift up the next generation of diverse businesses in the construction industry,” said Kelly Powers Baria, Co-Lead of the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Work Group of Lakeside Alliance. “We are excited to release this next round of bid packages as part of an inclusive and transparent procurement process to select those who will be awarded this work. We look forward to continuing to create new partnerships with diverse contractors on this transformative project.”

For decades, racial and ethnic minorities and women competing for construction contracts have faced systemic barriers, gender stereotypes, and a lack of access to opportunities. By awarding at least 50% of subcontractor packages to diverse businesses, Lakeside Alliance is aiming to change this narrative and provide unprecedented opportunities for them to participate at all levels of the project.
