Workforce Spotlight: Sharika Harris
A graduate of George W. Collins High School in North Lawndale, Sharika Harris found her career path with the help of Chicago Women In Trades (CWIT).
After getting connected to the Obama Presidential Center project via the We Can Build It Consortium (WCBI), Sharika spoke with Lakeside Alliance about what she enjoys most about her work, career advice and hopes for the project. Read more below:
How did CWIT and WCBI support your career growth?
Harris: They helped me develop my skills as a plumber, provided mentorship, gave me confidence, and furthered my knowledge of the construction industry overall. I really enjoy the connection to sisterhood I have through CWIT. CWIT connected me to WCBI, and WCBI helped me update my resume, prepare for interviews, and connected me with the contractor that offered me a job on the OPC project.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
Harris: Bringing architectural design to fruition. I love being part of a project from beginning to end — underground, roughing, trimming. I like to know that I’m a part of the project’s foundation.
What advice would you give someone who is seeking a career in the trades?
Harris: Don’t try to do it all alone! Apprenticeships can be overwhelming, but pre-apprenticeship programs really help prepare and support you. CWIT’s preparation — including math classes, counseling, and career advice — made all the difference for me.
What is your greatest hope for the outcome of the Obama Presidential Center project?
Harris: I hope it does what it set out to do: to give hope and inspire people from the community. I hope it provides a space for people to create new dreams and new opportunities for themselves. The first lady grew up just a few minutes from where the project is being built — that alone creates hope for the community.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Harris: Thank you to CWIT and WCBI for giving me the opportunity to be at the forefront of this historic project right here in the city I grew up in.
